May is for May Flies!!
« on: May 07, 2010, 02:10:02 PM »
Every year I look forward to some great mayfly hatches and spinner falls on my home waters.  There is just something special about seeing those sail boats floating down stream.

Here is a short list of the major Hatches i hope to hit in PA.
- Sulphers in both 14's and later in the Month 18's.  This has always been my favorite hatch.
- March Browns: If you have ever hit the perfect night for the spinner fall you should know what an epic spinner fall is.

- Light Cahills - This has always been a fun and productive hatch for me.

- Drakes-  I have been blessed to have fished some lesser know streams and rivers that have good drake hatches.  All 3 major species on the East Coast are in my home waters. ( Green, Brown, And Yellow) I also have a few small streams where I recently found the lesser known Dark Green Drake hatch.

I know I am missing some here so feel free to add any or tell us about the up coming hatches in your section of the world.

At boiling spring in the run you can see the sulfurs nymphs being taken out be the fish.

I had some sulphurs under my porch light last evening.  Its the first time I've ever noticed them.  Wind must have blown thm up from the creek because I'm a good 20 minute walk from it.  There were a few grammon there as well.

Mark,
I'd love to hit a March Brown spinner fall! We have a running joke between friends about the March Browns being the spinner that never falls.  I can't tell you how many times I have been on Penns creek and the spinners start stacking up over the riffles...and about 20 minutes later they disappear.

Yeah have seen the march browns ready to fall then they just seem to disappear.  I have a couple places locally where there are street lights and I will stay later and have even seen them fall a hour or two after dark.

Drakes are just fun to watch bugs that big take flight and a few years back their was just an epic hatch of ungodly numbers hatching on the lower clarion.

I can't wait till spring!
