Spring Hatches!!!
« on: March 11, 2009, 02:07:35 PM »
I know we are all getting excited about the up comming spring fishing.  I was wondering what everyones favorite Spring hatches are.  In my neck of Penns Woods the Gramon hatches can be amazing some years.  The caddis flys are in the air for a solid week and sometimes 2 weeks right around the end of april.  It is a fun hatch to fish and you can catch trout all day on some form of the hatch.

I think that is of the same family of caddis.  I am not 100% sure but i would bet on it.  i actually love how similar species have regional names it really adds to fly fishing.

I'm quite fond of the Hendricksons, but who isn't right?

I agree though, there's nothing like when Sedge starting taking to the air.  They are so exuberantly targeted by my little spotted friends that you may not see a single emerger through a light to moderate hatch.  Only collections of invisible refugees gathering near the shore line.

But right now I've got my eye out for BWOs.  Heading out tomorrow, but with a high of 30 I doubt they'll be much aerial activity.  Got the cam charged up and ready for some pic taking - report to follow.

Out here in the west the first major hatch is the BWO's. It really is a major hatch, we get people from all over the USA coming out to fish this hatch on the Provo. Going tomorrow for some much needed dry action. The first real stonflies (Skwalas) start making an appearance late April as well. They are a smaller darker bug than the huge stones that come off later in the season.

I have fished some small hatchs of BWO around here but never anything that was great I have always done better with PT nymphs when they are comming off in PA.  I am sure it is a different species.  BWO on the Provo is on my life list

Can't go wrong with the PT, it covers a wide range of mayflies depending on the size. You get 2 chances for the BWO's out here, the Spring and again in the Fall.

I personally have two favorites. The first is the hendrickson and the second is the caddis. Here in the southern NY area, these hatches are abundant and fun to fish. I have had 40-50 fish days. Albeit they are stockies but there are some holdover and natives to make it fun. Some of my favorite days are fishing those hatches with my 2wt!   8)

NY and PA top four for Spring would be the Blue-winged Olives (Baetis tricaudatus), The Blue Quill (Paraleptophlebia adoptiva), Quill Gordons (Epeorus pleuralis), and finally the Hendrickson(Ephemerella subvaria).  Out of these the Beatis represents the beginning, its exciting to start off the new year.  The Hendrickson, although sometimes frustrating is one of my favorite spring hatches.  The weather starts to break, usually we have very good water flows & temperatures and you have full foliage color.  Oh the fresh smells of Spring!!!!!!!!

Dang bra!  Why ya gotta drop all dat' greek on our asses?

Very cool.  I'd like to see more of it.  I dabble from time to time, but just like any foreign language it goes dry without regular exercise.  Troutnut.com is such a great resource for that end of the spectrum.  That guy should be given a weby award or something.  Hey!  Maybe a Troutlegend weby!

Hendricksons and spring.  That about sums it up for me.

I was chuckling as I was typing.  Did it to remind myself that I am pulling an immitation of a specific mayfly - not that green/bluish fly or the bigger rusty colored fly that usually drops in my head when a fish is rising.
