Whiting Herbert Miner Dry Fly Hackle Review
« on: February 23, 2009, 06:27:24 PM »
I finally tracked a Brown neck of this and a medium dun saddle down.  I chose to give the Pro Grade a try due to the price point.

Cape:  $30
Saddle: $20

I have not needed to buy a neck in years and I bought then on Ebay form a shop out west and I was scared they were going to be junk.  They are Whitings cheapest dry fly hackle.  Hands down at first inspection they are much better than any metz neck I have ever had.  Long stems and nice tips that are pretty even epically for the price.  I don't tie a ton of classic drys but I do enjoy the Catskill style.  It just makes me feel like I have a connection to the past.  I will let you guys know after I tie some Adams up tonight what my true grade is but so far I am impressed and excited about the deal I got.

PA, good report.  Looking forward to your final evaluation.  I need to invest in some decent necks over the next year so this might come in handy.

Ok i spun up a few black body adams.

Brown Cape:

Over all the Quill stiffness is about perfect and the Color looks good on the hook.  I was able to get 2 size 14 flies with some to spare out of one quill.  I think I would go up a grade or two next time since there is a good amount a webbing on there hackles but really that is just me being a perfectionist for for that casual of part time dry fly guy these are great.  They are comparable to grade 2 Metz in the Pro Quality.  These necks are essentially Whitings Herbert Miner reject or second runs so they fall short of the bronze grade.  At the price I would call say there are worth it but I have a feeling there may be a lot of variability from neck to neck.

Quick Grade: 8  mostly because it is good quality that does not break the bank.

Ill grade the Saddle soon once i spin up a few flies.
