Cabelas L-TECH fly rod
« on: April 29, 2010, 05:34:39 PM »
I got a new cabelas fly fishing cadelog and opened the page and saw the new L-TECH rod ang liked the new design of the rod. And was wondering if any one is going to be geting it and tell us about it. Also you can check it out at this link

David,

I sell the L-Tech rods at work (Cabelas), and have fished them a little.  Since I work for Cabelas, you might think my opinion of these rods is biased, but if you knew me well, you'd know I'll just tell you my opinion of the product based on the advantages and disadvantages of the rod.

The L-Tech is exceptionally light, especially for the price.  Compare it to any of the lightest rods on the planet and it will stack up quite nicely.  L-Tech's feature an "out of the box" reel seat design.  Basically all rods have the blank through the seat but on an L-Tech there isn't an insert to cover the blank.  This eliminates excess weight, and creates a neat techy look for the rod.

The disadvantage to the L-Tech's light weight design is its loss of backbone or power.  I had the opportunity to fish the L-Tech's alongside Sage Z-axis rods in 5 and 6 weights.  The L-Tech's lightness was nice for dries, or lighter dry/dropper rigs, but suffered compared to the Z when casting sink tips and streamers.  Then again, it isn't really fair to compare a $700 rod with a $250 rod.  There SHOULD be a difference in these rods, and there is.  That said, for the price I don't think you'll find a better superlight rod than the L-Tech.

Hope that helps
