Echo Shadow PE is here!
« on: April 30, 2010, 08:32:48 PM »
I am stoked.

For now, I am going to pair it with my Lamson velocity 1.5. . .which is a little light for a 10" 6, but you know, one thing at a time.   8)

Great, Pete!

Just curious, why no 9'6" offering?  Any plans for a Shadow that length in the future?

Enjoy the day.

Tough to compete with the 9' 6" CZN!  especially at that price.  There are no plans at this point for a 9'6 Shadow...yet!

I think Tim will just be happy to get his R&D money back at this point...lol

We have been seriously discussing a 12 footer though, and possibly an ultra light handmade domestic model...the Shadow-X, but it will probably run an outrageous 1000.00 price tag.

What weight are you thinking of using if you make a 12'?  That would be a nice lenght on some of the bigger water I fish.

I was thinking 5wt would be the way to go.  You need decent size streams to be effect with a rod that long.  It would really be a sweet tool for Polish nymphing if it is up to the same standards as the current Shadows.  Bigger water usually means the chance for bigger fish that extra back bone with a 5wt would be nice.
Of course the 10' 6"  3wt really handles fighting big fish from my experience.

I fished mine the past 2 outings and I'm very impressed with the tracking and accuracy of the casts, this has been discussed where a too limp of a rod fails.  One of the highlights for me was how much sac it has in the butt section.  I got a few fatty bows in hard pocket water and had no problems putting the screws to 'em and bringing them to net.  I think it does well with soft hackles also.  I fished a pair when fish started coming up on emerging caddis using an upstream and dead drifting aproach and it worked them well, and the fish were giving me plenty smashes.  I ended up using a velocity 3 and 444 dt4 for line and it works for me.  Good job guys.  The 10'6" seems to be a popular choice.

I'm curious if you could even build a 3 or 4 weight 12footer and not end up with a noodle???  The Shadow and CZN 3wts are pulling their equal weight as my "go to" rods right now depending on water type/size and conditions.

I'm not sure it could be done with the same action...the domestic handmade rod might be able to pull this off...

we can try!

Hey Pete,
I see the tendency with this euro rod craze is to go longer.  When is enough enough?   Is it just the strive for the perfect tool, or something else.  I mean I can understand why, but then again from the other side why continue to push the length envelope...

the 12 foot 5wt will be as much a wet fly rod as a nymphing rod---if not more.  Wetfly rods in the UK have been long for decades.

I doubt the length of most of the new production Euro-Nymphing rods will ever exceed the fips mouche rod length restrictions...

Rich, the fips-mouche regulation is 12' max.  I know personally if there's a 12' rod on the market with similar characteristics and performance to the 3wtShadow I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.  It probably wouldn't be my everyday rod, but it could be an excellent competition tool and much more.

Thats cool, just wondering as I find the 10 foot rod as the bar for any type of nymph fishing and the 10.5-11 footers as better.  It is amazing the jump in versatility and line control when you go from 9 feet to 10+, it is funny how many anglers i encounter who didn't realize this.    I am starting to become much more adept at the euro methods and will probably start transitioning to teaching some of my clientele the ins and outs to get started in these tactics.  I am by no means a master at the craft but have become pretty consistent with it, albeit I have guided more than fished this year.  Primarily as a result of a 2 year old and 2 month old girl at home, the day job and my lovely wife working too.   So I guess it's safe to say Rich's free time to fish for himself take second if not third fiddle to those most important things.  It's ok though, it is well worth it.  Not to get too soft on everyone, but thanks for all the great information on the competitive nymph tactics to all of you on this forum.  Good stuff as usual.
