River Streamer Lines
« on: January 20, 2010, 10:08:47 AM »
We talk a lot about the various applicable lines for loch style fishing, but I was wondering what you were using for swinging/pulling streamers and other acundry patterns in competition on river venues?

I've used sinking lines like DI3 and DI5s to good success on certain venues, but I always get the feeling that some sort of sink tip lines would be more appropriate.

For instance, at this year's Nationals I think I ended up scoring a 2 just behind Norman Makitma on the Little Juniata. For the high but receding water I chose a type 5 (or was it a 3?) on a short 4 foot 3x leader with 2 estaz type buggers.  I did well, but thought having a full sink line might not be optimal since I was rarely fishing in more than 8 feet of water - usually 4 or less.  More to the point, having the "near" line on casts over 20 feet sinking and connecting with debris and rocks was a bit of a set back at a times. However, I wonder if a sink tip could achieve the same depth.  Seems like there have been some advancements in these lines of late, but I just haven't tested any in recent years.

Dejon,
I don't compete, but I fish a lot of streamers both in and out of a driftboat.  Personally the best streamer line out there in my opinion for versatility is the Rio DC 24 ft 150 grain line.  The least amount of coil problems, the running line is a floater and doesn't sink and twist up around your legs while wading, and if you mend it for weighted streamers will sink just fine.  Ive tried them all, this is hands down the superior integrated line out there.  Once you get to a 200 grain line the amount of coil and tangle increases exponentially.  I use the 150 about 85% of the time, apprehensively I will use 200 if the conditions permit.  The airflo lines are great till the weld breaks, usually within hours like my last one did, the sa lines are my second choice, but they too twist and coil really bad, and most have an intermediate running line that will give you the fits.   I have one rio 150 thats got about 600 outings under its belt, and although dirty it still works fine...  my 2 cents

Nice info Rich. I've been thinking about fishing streamer a bunch next spring in hopes of getting the big one I've been looking for. What type of rod do you guys like to use?

D-
I used a Teeny 200 for both the Little "J" and Penns during the comp. The night before i left Idaho i tossed it and my 6 weight rod in with my gear. I know a lot of competitors were streamer fishing with their spring creek rods.  A good sink tip is a wise investment for the very reasons you stated.

I use a T200 and T130 teeny lines also.  I will give the rio dc a try I have heard numerous good things about it.  I use a Loop 9'6" 6wt. and the T200 rips out of that rod.  It also doubles as my smallmouth set up.

Nick,
I used to fish a 9' 6 weight Sage TCR with a fighting butt for a while then, a Winston 6 weight BiiMx which I have broken 3 times, and is now waiting to head back to the plant.  Love that rod, light, precise, landed all of my real big night time browns on that stick too.   I did dabble a bit last year with my 9' 7 TCX also, really like that stick as well, its a toss between that one and the winston.   More often than not I stick with a 6 weight, its all you need for the 150-200 grainers...

nick if you are in the market the tfo ticr 6 wt. is a monster. i have the one with the fighting butt.  it is heavier then the sage rods but as far as casting heavy lines and big flies i like it better then my sage tcr. for the price this rod cannot be beat

I've heard that was a good one Craig. If I get into the streamer big time I'll probally get a dedicated streamer rod.

Nick,
if possible, go with an 8'6" to 9' rod when chucking streamers.  The longer rods are a bit overkill in my opinion.

At least it doesn't match your waders and wading boots.   ;D

 :-*

I need to go fishing.  I'm going nuts.  I haven't even had time to tie many flies.  I've tied maybe 2 dozen or so since River was born.   Maybe I'll get out to the brookie stream or something with the fam this weekend if weather is ok.   I know 6 inch brookies won't quench my thirst though.  :-\

I'm with Rich on this one.  I have the Rio DC 24 ft but mines in 200 grain.  I don't have a problem with it tangling or coiling, but I haven't used it too much yet, so we'll see.  I have used it enough to agree that it's the nicest streamer line that I've ever encountered for active presentation.  When I'm wanting to work streamers slow, I still prefer a floater and split shot.

I've used full sinkers and much shorter sink tips.  I think that shorter sink tips, like 12 feet or less, aren't much use.  Again, I'd rather go with a floater and split shot, but when you plan to move those streamers off the banks and throgh the water, and you want to cover a lot of it and find the big boys, fishing fast but staying deep, you'll love that Rio line.
