Golf Course Fly Fishing
« on: July 27, 2010, 09:04:03 AM »
Where I work is located on a local golf course and from time to time I sneak on to and fish the front pond that is away from any firing lanes from golf balls.

Yesterday was one of those days and I was able to catch 3 bass and 4 bluegill in a total of 5 minutes fishing.  It is amazing how aggressive these fish are since they are never really fished for. The bass all seem to be around 10 to 12 inches but being able to sight fish for bass that are cruising the weed bed looking for food is still fun.  Now if I can ever get enough guts to sneak on and fish the bigger pond that is suppose to have some nice crappie in it that would be fun. Maybe that will be a fall outing.

My style for sure, nothing beats a sneeky quick catch. You can make nice little aerodynamic poppers out of golf tees by drilling a small pilot hole thru the little cup of the tee, inserting the eye of the hook thru the pilot hole and gluing/tying the shank of the hook to the shank of the tee. tie in some rubber legs, cut the tee a little shorter and you got urself a nice lil popper. It would really complete the whole ambviance of the golf motif. If ya fish til dark you can  hop the pool on your way home too. Been there done that.

One river I fish passes through a golf course, and come September through January, it can have some decent salmon and cutthroat fishing.  They use the ponds as part of the spawning/rearing habitat for the salmonids, so you cannot fish in them, but the river is a fairly nice setting meandering through a nice manicure grassy field.

Just have to watch out for flying golf balls (guys here are TERRIBLE).  No one hardly ever yells FORE!  You have to have good eyesight!  Haha!

Growing up I lived next to a golf course that had trout in one of the ponds. The club owners had one of those catch and release plywood ponds during one of their old timers events. At night we would sneek in with our nets and scoop a net full of trout and release them in the pond. I didn't think they would take. What a suprize it was the first time I caught one.
I hear you on the "poor" golfers. came close a few time at getting hit with the ball. We started wearing hemets and hockey gear when we fished "the pond"

Once the fall hits I am going to try to sneak on to the other ponds one is suppose to be filled with crappie but I have not confirmed yet.

I wish there was trout but they are all shallow and get pretty warm.
