Trico Season
« on: July 09, 2010, 08:22:06 AM »
Tricos!!

It is that time of the year again.  Does anyone have any good stories yet of fishing this epic early morning hatch yet.  I have never had the pleasure of fishing it much myself so I am leaving it to some of the other guys to add some info learned from there experiences.
it is a neat little may fly.

Yeah--screw 6X and #24s and tie on a short 3X leader and #10 beetle and have at 'em!

I am a beetle-maniac and have 100% confidence in them.

I like the song Yesterday personally.  Not such a big fan of Hey Jude though.

Dry/dropper beetle rig.  Give it a go.

Helter Skelter all the way Tim!

d/d rig works fine but it's hard to slam under an overhang :)

No shot you will be throwing a bettle tomorrow.  With the amount of rain dumping right now it will be sink tips and vladi worms....maybe even a wading jacket and water wings.

Tricos are a neat hatch in my book.  Like always I've been trying to oversimplify my tying approach to them.  I think one of the reasons a lot of guys get so frustrated fishing this hatch is you have to have a backup plan. I carry a handful of trico patterns - maybe 6 or 7.  If I can't get an active feeding fish on one of those then I usually try to fool her with a reaction strike pattern. If that doesn't work then I just pass her by with admiration.  That's the key.  If you're out to catch every trico feeding fish on a trico pattern then you better make patience your friend :)

Not the case.  Spring looked fine.  Takes a lot more than that to bring her into the Muddy range.

Enjoy the day.

It was pretty muddy and high on the lower end in the morning but it cleared up by noon.

I recall the Trico hatch being the bane of my fly-fishing days in wny and I got my butt kicked more than once.  I persisted and eventually found some patterns that worked and it was much less frustrating.  I agree with tossing a beetle out there, when you can't outsmart the fish with the "right" fly, get em with the "wrong" one.  Plus it saves you heartache on the drive home if you landed some fish.
