Hello,
My name is Arron Varga from Fergus, Ontario and a few friends recommended your site to me and I am glad they did. I am an avid fly fisherman and fly tier.

It looks like an excellent resource and I hope I can contribute.

Yeah, that's a pretty tasty little rig he's using there! You guys should be able to get some gradeA material.

Stream or Lake fishing this weekend?

Some streams/rivers up around Malone. Need to practice some czech nymphing and french nymphing.

I have tied up a bunch of flies from the Secret Flies of the Czech and Slovak Fly-Tiers, espiecially Klima patterns to try.

Great to see you here Buddy!!!

For those who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Arron, let me tell you that he ranks among the best fly tyers that I have met to date (no exaggeration). Arron is also a very accomplished fly fisher and has competed at the past five Canadian National Championships. He has been a key member of Team Canada at the past two Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships (we were team mates at Scotland's Commonwealths in 2009). He qualified and was invited to join this year's Team Canada for Poland's WFFC and Wale's Commonwealths.

I am glad to see that Arron found his way to this site, as his angling and tying skills, as well as his insight, will make him a very valuable member of this community...

Fishing on the Grand has been good but tough...cool nights meant hatches have not been the best but the river is getting better and cleaner every year.

Had to pull out the comp tricks and really work hard for the fish, but that made them more rewarding.

FOGR has some new projects to improve sections of the river for fishing and trout which will hopefully pay off.

To be honest, I fish the Conestogo more then the Grand as there are less people and almost as many fish. Also the river has no restrictions so it is a great place to practice competition techniques.

I haven't fished the Grand in quite some time, but the last time I did I was having a really tough go of it. It was August and the water was low, fish were pressured, and no one was catching any fish... except for the occasional trout that would reveal a large rise form.

I was about to throw in the towel for the day when I noticed this angler working downstream to my position. He was catching a fish about every 25 feet. I was absolutely dumb founded and intrigued. He was fishing a rather short leader system with a single simple cdc caddis. If I remember correctly it was just a cdc wing w/ dubbed body about an 18 maybe a 16. He was fishing the single dry right under his rod tip in a fairly casual manner, but i could tell he was really concentrating on watching that fly for those short upclose drifts.

I was wondering if this is a method that is often effective on the Grand or that region? Or if anyone has any experience with "short lining" a single simple dry like this?

August...not a good time to be on the Grand...most of us locals have moved of to fishing for carp and bass on other waters.

By August most of the fish on the Grand have a PHd's in Entomology and have the Fly Tiers Benchside reference under their fins and check your fly before they give you the one fin salute and dive back down because it was not an exact match or did not have enough ribs or too much hackle

If I do fish the Grand then yes I use a French Style dry fly fishing method which is all leader with small very minimalistic flies.

Best time to come to the Grand is May and June for some awesome Caddis and Mayfly Hatches, plus the water temps are right for the big browns to be active, there are some 26"-30" fish caught last year.

Yeah, that same guy showed me a pic of a legitimate 7+lber. I hear they are mostly caught in the gorge area though?

I find short french dry style very intriguing. It's something I haven't really dabbled much with. Sure nymphs, but not the surface. Do you think the rise forms are just so delicate/quick that you can only spot them at that close range?

That time of the year you are looking at mainly tricos and midges...#18 would be a big fly. If I do fish that time of year I am not on the river before 8pm.

Rise forms will be small especially during the day....but that time of year they are just sips....more likely to hear them then see them.

Big fish through out the river if you know where to go, but they are not easy to catch. I can name about 20 pools with 20" plus fish.

Best time to catch and see the big fish is in the evening..then the rise forms are big. If you get up here early season and can catch a mayfly spinner fall then man o man.

The other time is September when the ants are in the water.

I have seen 24" fish practically leaping out of the water and go stupid...which was good for me
