attching flies in euro. nymphing setup
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:07:13 PM »
I'm having trouble attaching my flies. When I attach them to the bend the note tend to slip, and if I attach them to a dropper tag it hangs down and gets tangles up any advise.

Use and orvis tippet knot and attach your flies to the tag end that is bending away from the tippet.  For a better explanation go to Loren Williams website: http://www.flyguysoutfitting.com/droppers.html

I find that if I am attaching a heavier fly, I have to use at least 4x tippet.   I also find that if the dropper is too long, then this increases my tangles.  I try to keep the dropper 4 inches or less.   Instead of using the tag end of knot, try tying on a piece of tippet with a duncan loop above a knot.   This way the dropper swivels a bit around the leader.   Experiment.    Remember tangles will always be with us.

Tangles also happen when you deliver erratic or tight looped changes in your cast.  This doesn't relate specifically to force though.  For instance - if you have a snag and forcefully pop it free and follow through to the other side back into the water you'll often keep your rig tangle free and  intact.... but try to stop the rig mid air and you cause a backlash that causes tangles.
