Egg Patterns for trout
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:34:16 PM »
So why are these so deadly on trout sometimes.  I know that it seems like fresh stocked rainbows will often ignore anything else but you pus a glo bug by them and sometimes I think they will move 10 feet for it.  What are some of everyones feelings on why this is.  Love them or hate them they do catch fish.

as far as the freshly stocked rainbow thing goes, it sure looks alot more like a pellet than most other food items...

I personally love them, as egg patterns can be extremely effective for enticing rainbows, cutthroat and whitefish when our Pacific salmon are spawning. But for the rest of the year I tend to have more consistent results presenting nymphs to these fish.

Hey, whatever works!

So long as its not mauling the fish and they are released for others to enjoy, fish with what you want!

Unless a rule ammendment is in place, I believe they're perfectly legal in FIPS.

I once heard Gary Borger say that trout have an IQ of 6, but included within was the ability to quickly analyze a food source, calculate the return on investment in regards to energy expended versus calories gained, and make a decision as to whether to pursue the food source or let it drift by.

My guess is that egg patterns, simply by appearance, represent a large return on investment.

IQ doesn't work for ranking humanbeings intelligence... how could it possibly be used to relate the complex, evolved, and instinctual "intelligence" of a trout.

Can't answer that one...but it was a great podcast, dedicated entirely to the design of flies that appeal to trout.

Yeah I have listened to that one and it is worth the time.  It is almost all protein so maybe it is to hard to pass up.  It is crazy on days when nothing else works.  I have noticed on my local streams they work best in the spring when suckers are finishing up there spawn.  So really there it is matching the hatch in some sense.

Sorry, that was purely rhetorical and not directed at your comment.  I should have added the correct rhetorical smiley face  :-\

Perfectly legit question, however!  How DO you measure the IQ of a trout?  :-\
