Have a question about fly line to leader connection. I was using a fly line loop to connect the leader, then I switched to a piece of mono nail knotted to the line with a non-slip loop. Here's the problem, that nonslip loop and the loop I tie on the leaders and that piece of mono have big knots which bump the guides and that irritates me, I can't stand that. Other than nail knotting the leader directly to the fly line, how can I make the connection without the big knots? I like to be able to swap leaders.

Somewhere on here I think we've discussed this before but thats ok. If your fly line has a loop try using a three turn clinch knot with the butt section of your leader. If it doesn't nail knot on a piece of hard mono and tie a perfection loop in that. Then use the three turn clinch knot.

I like to nail knot off a tiny loop in the flyline with backing. Then as Nick suggested just do a 3 turn clinch to attach. Nice and neat:

The clinch knot to the fly line loop dosen't allow for rapid leader changes though. Has to be retied when the leader is changed.

How long does it take you to tie a clinch knot?

Seriously though. It's not fast enough for you? I would think it might take longer to unloop one leader and then loop the other.

Just a tip. Remember, when you're doing loop to loops. Thread the fly line through the leader loop then put the leader tip through the fly line loop and pull.

John not trying to say your wrong but I can cut off a leader and tie a three turn clinch knot as fast as I can slide a loop to loop leader together. Maybe I'm just slow at sliding my loop to loop leaders on or maybe I just tie clinch knots to often but give it a shot it might be what your looking for.

You could try a whitlock knotless connection to a small mono loop that would slim it down a bit also. I use the whitlock connection on most of my set ups that don't require excessive changes in the butt section.

Use braided loops, but secure it to the fly line with fly tying thread, a whip finish and flexible head cement or Loon Outdoors' Knot Sense to keep it smooth and tapered.

For sinking lines; you can simply strip the outer PVC coating on sinking lines, bu soaking the last four inches in acetone and then peel it with you finger nails. Once you have exposed the braided core, create a tight loop and secure and whip finish and epoxy the knot for added strength and smoothness. Keep in mind that this won't work with clear, intermediate sinking lines, as they lack a braided core...
