long line euro nymphing
« on: June 10, 2010, 05:52:21 PM »
I had a kind of stupid question is long line euro nymphing, Spanish nymphing, or french nymphing, or something else.

It's so hard to say.  There really isn't a standard term.

However, I'd say "Long line Euro Nymphing" depending on your rigging is Spanish Nymphing.  French Nymphing is something else.

I'd say its any kind of nymphing where there's some form of tapered leader between your flyline and your sighter.  I think it can be czech, spanish, or French style, depending on presentation.  But no need to get hung up on semantics.   I believe its any type of nymphing that takes place somewhere other than directly under your rod tip.

Exactly Chris.  It's all semantics. Without some "wikipedia" type association that sets standards and deviations in fly fishing nomenclature we all have to muddle through.

What I've been specifically calling "long lining" or sometimes "long line euro nymphing" is a technique that uses a very long level leader.  Usually your fly line never sees the light of day and your flies must be weighted.

Speaking of a "fly fishing wikipedia" - has anyone seen this excellent resource?  ;D :

I tell people that under the umbrella of "Euro Nymphing", the Czech & Polish styles fall under the short leader category (leaders typically close to rod length, give or take a few feet, casts are usually short), and the Spanish & French are in the long leader category (typical leaders running 18-30+ feet).

As far as the term "long line", well that gets a little grayer, because you can have a 30' leader on but fish with only 10 feet of it out the end of your rod, and conversely you could have a 10' Czech/Polish leader set up but throw the leader plus 30 feet of fly line out of your rod tip.

In general, I think when people talk about long line Euro Nymphing they are typically referring to the long leader methods mentioned above (French, Spanish) that allow you to easily fish the weighted flies at longer range.

I certainly could be wrong here, so please correct me if I am.  However, I would like to see some standardized nomenclature for clarification of what techniques people are actually utilizing.  That  being said...This is my interpretation up to this point.

Czech nymphing-Basically fishing a short line (10' or so out of the rod tip) and if you are facing directly across the stream with 90 degrees being directly in front of you, fishing from the 45 to 135 degree marks.  Lead/drag flies back.  Flies generally track beneath or not too far away from your rod tip.

French nymphing-Up stream nymphing while facing up stream.  Both short or long line depending on leader length, but with very little line out of the rod if any at all.  Lead/drag flies back, never letting them fall downstream of your position.

Polish Nymphing-Longer line nymphing, usually with leaders 20+ feet long.  Line is allowed to bow creating tension on the flies while they head down stream speeding them up.  Usually covers water further away than with French and Czech styles.

Spanish Nymphing-  Tension is kept on flies fished further away, up to 30+ feet like Polish style, yet line is held high as in Czech nymphing, and the flies are less led than stayed in contact with while dead drifting.

Anything else in this genre of nymphing I kind of consider a hybrid of my above definitions. Please share your thoughts!

Jason,

When I picture true Polish nymphing the rod tip is rather low and well downstream of the cast as they are pulled just a tad faster than the current they are in after they are allowed to reach depth.   It is a short leader affair--roughly the length of the rod.

CN:  short leader but often much lighter flies than PN.  The flies are allowed to pendulum under the rod tip then the rod tip and flies track roughly as a unit.  Resembles our high sticking in many ways.

French:  long leaders, upstream, short drifts

Spanish:  long leaders up and across, longer drifts.

It doesn't matter...
1.  adapt to the situation
2.  catch fish
3.  call it whatever the heck you want to call it...name the technique after yourself if you want to
4.  post porn in a fishing forum
5.  argue about what the technique you were using was called when you caught the fish in the porn you posted in the forum
6.  repeat

***little known fact...if you don't take a picture of rod and reel but only of the fish, you can get away with using a spinning reel and it is just as much fun because you are fishing nonetheless

Do you guys think it would be worth me splitting czech and polish nymphing in the "Technique MasterList"?  I'd like to keep that list updated and evolving as we further refine the definitions. It's a good intro for newcomers too!

Tim, are you sure you're at the right forum :)  This is kinda "what we do around here".

Dejon,

I think it's a great idea to split them.  It gives Vladi the recognition he's due and recognizes the Czechs for the adaptations they've made.

Loren's description of the various techniques is one of the best I've seen.
