Nymphing!! go to nymphs!
« on: March 10, 2009, 01:59:12 PM »
Ok so seeing this one empty bugged me long enough.  So what are some of your "Go To" nymphs?

Mine are:

Hares Ear, PT nymph, My own "Hanes Special". I would also throw a Walts Worm in to the mix. I have others but these are just a few.

Thankyou!   :D

My Go Tos are certainly HE and PTs.  Many different variations with wings, ribbing, hot spots, thorax, legs, beads, etc, etc. etc.  But  they all stem from the basic HE and PT.

Biot Nymphs take a lot of room in my box too.  From small midge to large size8 pseudo-copper-johns.

Zebra Midge in a spectrum of color and sizes or the "Floss Fly" as I like to call it.

Dubbed Caddis Patterns and Leggy Stonefly looking creations take up their good share of square-inch-ege.

What i think i lot of novice nymph fisherman seem to hae trouble with is how simple the effective patterns really are.  Lets face it I really hate to spend much time making complex nymphs only to lose them on the second cast.

Yep i agree in pratice the simple buggy stuff works better and you can tie them up quickly.  I could care less if they don't look perfect they sure do look pretty darn sexy in the fishes lip!

PTN, GRHE and Czech Nymphs tied in an assortment of colours and sizes. All of mine are tied with tungsten beads and a few wraps of lead...

PT and HE... go to flies the world over!

One thing I've noticed lately from some of the top tiers and competitors is they are switching over to synthetic materials that last longer, but also create a slimmer profile.  Many of these guys are "short shanking" their flies and looking for a very slim and quickly tapering body.  Thread bodies, synthetic herl, and hard to find materials like "Body Quills" are starting to replace standard PT and HE on alot of these flies.

Synthetic materials can also provide a bit of flash and glow, varying bouyancies and a much larger miriad of colors.  Skinny flies or slimmer profiles really makes a difference.   Looking back at some of the flies I tied when I was younger - fat, bigger the better - provide the fish with a tasty morsel.  My father always laughed at my nymphs(mental child abuse) - he always said keep them skinny.  I hate to agree with him, but he was right and it has made a difference over the years.

I agree most of time slimmer is better but some of the more popular nymphs are not what you would call slim.  Prince Nymphs are one.  I know I use a lot of Walts Worms and other big nympgs to great success.  Most stonefly nymphs are bigger and fat.  I add a lot of wieght to some of my bigger nymphs just to get them down in some of the deep fast water i fish.  The dropper is usually much smaller and thinner so its the best of both worlds.

Go-to nymph flies (or styles of nymph flies) all w/ tungsten-heads:

-- PTs & PT variations.
-- HEs & HE variations.
-- Nymphs with buggy HE, squirrel, or pine squirrel thoraxes;
and thread/biot/or stripped & dyed peacock herl bodies;
ribbed with both fine wire and a dark synthetic ribbon of some
kind to define segmentation; with and w/o flashbacks.

Not surprisingly, PTs are on most lists here. It's interesting that this thread has also come around to talk about 'slender-bodied' nymphs. Here is a photo of an original Frank Sawyer PT tied with a copper wire 'thread'. Maybe Sawyer had slender-bodied baetis nymphs in mind when he designed his pattern?

Sawyer never lived to see a beadheaded PT.

Todd, great to see you around.

Kevin,

I know the spooled "Body Quill" is pretty scarce :) , but do you carry any of the other synthetic body materials?

here's the body quill material: pricey:

My go to nymphs:
BHPT's-I like the flashback variation
Frenchies-with orange hot spots
These flies have saved me quite a bit this season but the one fly that I put on first is my Latex Caddis Larva or as I affectionally call it, my French Tickler.  This nymph has consistantly caught fish for me all season long.

Details

Not the prettiest fly in the world but it is just ugly enough to draw some major attention.

Kev,
I really like the looks of those hooks, I may have to purchase some from you.    That French Tickler fly there is nice too LOL.

My go to nymphs are easy and its quite rare that I'd use something else. These just always get the job done so I hardly ever use something else.

Anchors:
Czech nymphs (no bead just flat lead)
Woven nymhs (Tons of sizes and colors)
My rubber legged stonefly (Nick's Stone there is a tutorial on here somewhere)

Dropper:
Frenchie (tons of sizes and colors)
Hare and copper (Great fly that can look like anything)
Midges (tiny and usually red or black)
Scuds (tiny in green or gray)
