I am curious why the oven it is some much easier and safer to boil your curlies in water on the stove.

You can get the oven hotter so you can shock the leader in place better. But I just started boiling the curl and it is much safer and it makes less of a mess.

I would be worried about melting the Mono in the oven.

If you put it in too long that will happen. It only happend once to me. If you put it at 350F for 10 to 15 minutes it should be ok.

Dude i got no need to cook any mono!  The boiling works great.  Flat out oven cooking makes zero sense to me.

Instead of making the curly just go with 10lb or 8lb  yellow mono from your flyline then red mono and back to yellow. The color contrast makes the strike easy to see. I have been nymphing with straight mono no flyline, and this indicator system for a couple of years now after being taught by Mike Drinan.

Instead of using red and yellow I just use yellow but mark it with a permanent marker for strike detection.

it's hard to see straight mono 40-feet away in a riffle.

Do a search on the net.  Bass pro and other places carry them.  Berkely Solar Green, Andes Tournament Yellow, Cabelas Pink Flouro, and Gold Stren are just a few of the lines preferred by members here.

If I'm understanding you question correctly you want that distance to be 1 1/2 to 2 times the depth of the water your fishing.

Rather than change tippet all the time I pull of a whole body lenght of tippet than cut an additional 20 inches of tippet and add my dropper. This cover the majority of situations for me.

Sorry, you'll have to elaborate on that one?  I'm not sure what you're asking.  Unless you get a friend to tie up your leader for you while your in the woods digging a cat hole you should know exactly how far it is  ;)

I meant the distance from the fly to the curl because I have a piece of straight mono from the curl to the fly.

I had a chance to fish this coil material the other day with good success. it was in the size 35 mm. Highly visible and floats well. They even have some coils already made with the micro rings for easy connections to the leaders.

John has that stuff available at wflies.com.   He's all sold out at the moment, but when he gets some back in you can use creekaddict in the coupon code section for free shipping.

Here is a link  http://wflies.com/Tippets.html

If you Email John, he'll put some on hold for you for the next order.

Does it matter how long you boil the curl because it seems the longer I boil it the better it stays in its place. Or is there a disadvantage.
