August 2009 Fly of the Month "Hanes Special" Nymph
« on: August 12, 2009, 09:33:44 PM »
So here it is the fly you have all been waiting for. Eventually I will do step by step but for know i am going to show a couple of photos of the fly and describe how to tie it.

Hanes Special

Materials:

Thread:  Black
Hook:  TMC 200R or similar hook Sz: 12
Bead is optional and color works.
Abdomen: White Rabbit Belly Fur
Wings: Brown Brahma Hen attached on each side
Thorax:  White Rabbit in front of the wings
Head:  Peacock Quill or Peacock Ice Dub (I like ice dub for durability)

This is one of the first nymphs of my own design that i came up with when i first started tying.  It has saved a few days for me and i think it is mostly due to its looks like a lot of things in the water.  When it gets wet the thread color bleeds through so try some other thread colors it really has a cool effect when wet.  I fish it like a normal nymph or it even works well as a wet fly on the point.  I also have fished it like a streamer with success.  I have kept this fly a secret for many years and it will catch you trout I am sure of it.  It really seems to work well on fresh stockers but it also has caught wild browns for me.  It may not look like much but it works. This is the first introduction of this fly to the world so you are getting one of my secret patterns today.  I think it is fairly unique in design. At least I have never seen any fly like it.

Here is a pic of one of the trout I caught on it tonight a nice foot long brown.

PA, great start!  That looks like a very fishy bug.

I think if you set up a background and just slightly tweak the lighting these pics are going to be killer!  That fly really looks like it has some motion and it's sitting still in a vise:)

Looking forward to it. Just took my first tying lesson with Dejon. To tell you the truth, it was not as hard as I thought it was going to be. As with everything, my barrier was patience. However, I am also an anal and methodical person so hopefully these qualities will come out with tying. Thanks again Dejon.

And FFPA, now that I understand a little more about tying, I am really looking forward to what you have to offer. Thanks - this is great.
