CDC
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:06:27 PM »
I have been looking into more usees for CDC and I have seen where the europeans really use it a lot.  And not just for dry flies. It gets used for dubbing and many other applications.. Does anyone use cdc that much for fly tying on here.  I have really never used it that much myself but I wnat to.  Ideas, thoughts?

It makes very good wingcases and also you can use it as hackle on your soft hackles.

Yeah i seen that and i am verry interested in experimenting with it on wing cases.  If it traps air bubbles like it should it really may be deadly.  I just wish the stuff was not some darn expensive!

I use cdc on more and more flies lately.  It really is a fantastic material.  I'm sure you guys have seen this site, but this guy uses it in almost every fly he ties... and they are superb:

WOW!  Those patterns are unbelievable.  What a great site thanks for sharing.  I have never seen that before.  My buddy and I had a few conversations about cdc this weekend and both of us agreed we need to use it more.  For a lot of cases it seems like a no nonsense replacement for hackle wraping that would be just as, if not more effective.  Perhaps I just haven't tied enough flies but I have a lot of trouble with hackle, so I am always looking for alternatives.

Very nice!  I'm really going to have to get me some of that Coq De Leon - I should have had you include a few feathers in my last order.  The barring on those tails just looks amazing.

I would suggest taking a look at the book Tying Flies with CDC and looking up Marc Petijean, a huge proponent of using CDC.  He has some really cool split thread methods for making "parachute" style CDC emergers.

A great and easy fly to start out using cdc at first is the F-fly, and if you ask Ian James, he'll tell you it can be like freakin crack!  It's one of my favorite flies to fish in size 20-24 (as midges or BWOs) on Spring Branch in Iowa.  Yes, Iowa has trout streams, mostly all spring creeks, and they are fishable year round with no closed season!

I really still like CDC for doing my emergers and stuff to ride in the surface film for spring creek stuff, but some of the nymphs and such that employ cdc are sick.

FFPa,

Yes. If you email me at info@performanceflies.com I will send you a catalog. Coq de Leon saddles & capes, Siman products, DOHIKU barbless European hooks, Fly D&K (Slovakia) tying products, and wholesale-priced tungsten beads (regular bore).

RedQuill,

Really interesting.

The Petitjean link: http://www.petitjean.ch/eng/home/default.asp

What types of CDC emerger patterns work well on your spring creeks?

Thanks.
