Fly index
« on: July 28, 2009, 10:51:08 AM »
I found this website and their fly index contains most of my favorite flies. Their czech nymphs and goldhead stuff contains the flies I use 90% of the time. You got to love how simple these flies are and trust me they catch tons of fish.

That is a GREAT resource!  In addition to all the good fly shots there are a slue of excellent articles on everything from what it takes to win at Worlds to progressive streamer fishing techniques.

I thought you'd like that one. I really like some of their dubbing colors. Do you know what kind of hook they have some of those czech nymphs tied on? The ones with the straight eye. I like the look that gives.

I'm really not sure. I can usually name barbless hooks these days at first glance.  I want to say partridge, but I donno.

Did you read some of those articles?

It's funny.  When I first started comp. style fishing I was a Czech nymph nut!  I think it's a revelation a  lot of anglers are having these days.  But our local inland waters just really don't relate to true Czech style nymphing and those associated patterns.  Of course, I have a nice box full of Czech patterns, but they hardly ever get any play.  I lived near some bigger moving trout or grayling waters that would be a different story:)

I didn't read the articles yet.

I agree the czech/polish methods aren't really your best bet in most cases. Althought on some of the small freestones it works great. However the french/spanish style produces huge numbers for me and when fishing this way I use a czech nymph with no bead as my anchor 75% of the time with a small size 16 or 18 beadhead bug as my dropper. It always amazes me that a wild brown trout that is super picky about dry flies will eat a pink hot spot czech nymph along with a list of other crazy flies.

Just goes to show you there are several ways to skin the cat!  Many people think there's just one correct way to most effectively fish.  People get stuck on Wets or Dry/Dropper or Czech Nymphing, etc.  When in fact 10 different experts utilizing completely different presentations/styles can effectively compete on the same stretch of water.

You got that right Dejon. You put me on a fast moving freestone and I'll hang in there with anyone no doubt in my mind. You put me on super slow moving spring creek and I'll get my ass handed to me. You take me to a lake and forget it, I take out the casting gear and start throwing rubber worms to the lily pads for bass.

I like the Video idea.  that would be interesting.  SO whould this be a stream that none of the 5 experts ever fished?

Ripn, I get the sense you are not at all sarcastic  8)

PA, not just 1 stream, but a few venues they have never fished before would be ideal: 1 big freestone, 1 spring, 1 lake, for example.  I think it would be nice to do it with several cameras and piece it together later.  Put a Mic on the angler so they can talk a bit about what they are doing in the moment, but not deter them with stop, go, take 2 sort of stuff.  Obviously be pretty boring to watch just straight footage of 5 anglers fishing 3 venues of 3 hours each - one long 45 Hour DVD!!!:)  So, my thought would be to edit each angler in venue down to 5 or 10 minutes with highlights and get them to do voice overs detailing what is happening: "here I found my flies weren't proportioned correctly and that specific fish holding off that rock was feeding in the upper column so I changed to a..." blah blah blah, etc.

Don't roll your eyes at me. We can't all be as proficient as you.

That does sound like a good idea Dejon. What would you say is your personal go to method for say a medium size freestone at an average flow right now? Pretend you know nothing about it, what would you start out doing first?
