Indicator Fly
« on: October 30, 2009, 08:56:17 PM »
I got some of these new unibobber indicators today and heres what I came up with.

TMC 100 size 12 hook
Coq De Leon tail
Hares Ear dubbing (Spirit River Dazl)
Grizzly and brown hackles
8/0 brown Uni thread
White Unibobber post

Dry dropper should be super sweet now.

God those things are hideous. I bet it floats like a cork though.   Probably use some size 16 (or maybe bigger) tungsten and lead nymphs with that baby. I'll take a couple. ;D

Neato! Have you fished them yet?  Be interesting to see how it hooks/holds and if it elicits strikes as readily as a poly post version.

I've been experimenting with fly design for "super buoyant" dries like this one for some time.  One jive I have is a fly tied in this classic manner is that when it is afixed to a dropper to hold up some nymphs that it doesn't ride true in the water. It's more a head submerged pose.  To correct this I've tied variations backwards with the poly/yarn post at the very beginning of the curve and pointing  slightly backwards.  That way the center of the post is in line with the hook eye and thus the para wing should ride relatively flush with the water surface. Unfortunately my test patterns to date weren't very successful, but admittedly I do not spend much time Dry/Droppering.  One draw back was that a large amount of bulk was created at that bend point when tying in the yarn thus decreasing the gape.  This little "bobber bastard" might just do the trick!

I haven't used it yet.

Yes they are huge once you put it on a fly. I can see now why all the flies you see them on are huge stimulator type flies, you can kinda hide the indicator better. I'd bet this will catch its fair share of fish though and it should hold some serious flies.

I love the idea especially since somtimes I have a hard time picking up my indicator fly on the water in the dawn and dusk periods- poor dam eyesight :'( Anyhow, this looks great and should hold some serious flies. Nice job BL.

I tried tying several different dries for a dry dropper.  I noticed big bushy tailed attractors (wulff), the tail acted like a wick that soaked water and didnt float well.  I slowly starting backing off on the tails with better success.  I borrowed/stole egans cdc caddis design and its really good but when its wet its done, and its slow in comps to retie alot.  Ive tried tying stimulators out of the same closed cell foam that i tie boobies from with moderate success.  The problem with them is unless you get the body perfectly round they ride funny.  My newest experiment has been using some of the bass fishing braids that are out to make bodies.  It has a specific density less than water so it floats like crazy.  I like the idea of a thingamaboober fly.

It looks like a UFO!!!   i bet it will work please share how it seems to work.  I can really see it working great with slightly heavier flys in fas water.  I think I will need to got some of those to try a few Green Drake and Brown Drake patterns.

I will let you guys know but I don't have high hopes for it until next spring really. They only thing hatching now is BWO and maybe some caddis. It will still hang some nymphs though.

You migh tbe suprised if you find some trout that are packing on the feed bags they might just like that bigger bug this time of the year.  Don't be afraid to try it.

Oh I know, just last week the where bunch of wild browns rising like crazy to small olives. I tied on a stimulator and a size 20 BWO. The stimulator was just so I could track the olive and the brown I was fishing to smashed the stimulator.

I always like how something big will work when the trout are taking small stuff.
