Nick's Stonefly
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:04:38 PM »
Material list

TMC 5262 size 8 or 10
8/0 thread to match body color
Black nickel tungsten bead 3.8mm on size 8, 3.2mm on size 10
.020 lead wire
copper wire size small
brown goose biots
black sili legs
Davy Wotton SLF squirrel dubbing (black or dark brown)
Mottled Thin Skin

Slide on bead and attach tying thread

Attach two goose biots to the front of the hook and whip finish. Add a drop of zap gap to the finished thread and slide up bead. Apply lead under body a little more than half the hook shank.
Tip: Goose biots have a natural curve to them, tie them in with the curves facing away from one and other.

Attach tying thread behind lead underbody. Tie in two goose biots at the rear of the hook and add a drop of zap a gap.

Attach copper wire for rib. Cover lead underbody. Pinch and roll dubbing to tying thread.

Dubb abdomen to the half way point of the hook shank. Rib with copper wire using evenly spaced turns. Tie off rib and break rib off.
Tip: If you turn the copper wire in a circular motion it breaks off much cleaner than if you had cut it.

Tie in thin skin for wing cases, shinny side up so when you pull it over the dull side will be up. Tie in two sili legs one on each side.

Dubb the first half of the thorax and pull over thin skin. Tie thin skin down almost to the bead.

Tie think skin back to first half of thorax for a nice clear separation between the two wing cases.

Dubb second half of the thorax and pull over thin skin. Tie think skin down and cut off extra material. Dubb a very small amount behind the bead for a nice clean finish an whip finish.

Trim sili legs and catch tons of fish.

You can use a brass bead if you find its to heavy.
You can also use 6/0 thread I just use 8/0 because I feel like it leaves me room for error.
You can also change up dubbing colors to meet the needs of your own river.

Makes a great anchor fly for Euro rigs.

Even the little guys slam it.

Very nice stepbystep.  That's a great standard and I never leave home without a few!

Your fly shots are improving.  What kind of setup are you using now? (cam, lights, tripod, backdrop, etc)

Thanks Dejon.

Beleave it or not this is actually the first fly I photographed. The other ones you've seen are just getting worse because I shot this with the wife's camera and its usually with her.

This setup is a Canon Powershot A590 IS, a normal piece of white printer paper held behind the fly and $20 little spot light mounted to the ceiling above my desk (Think kinda like recessed lighting but cheaper. Got it at Lowes.).

My other shots are with my Olympus 1050SW. Great camera but the macro mode is better on the Canon. One day I'll get a macro lens for my D80 then I'll be set.

IMHO the 590is is THE greatest bargain in point&shoot in the last decade.  I was trying to find one for my buddy lately and they are all gone!  Not to drop a load on the 1050sw, but I had it for a bit and sold it at half the price I bought it for.  Terrible.  But I expected it to be my single go-to cam and that it's not.  Wish I would have kept it for water and snowy days - for that it seems so well suited.

You have a D80 and you're not utilizing that!?!?  Good god brother don't let that girl sit idle!  Buy a cheapo macro converter lens if you feel the stock one doesn't have enough.

Pull out that D80 get multiple light points and you're going to have some deadly fly photos!!!

I also really like the 590 and I used to carry that but the 1050 is great for not having to worry about soaking it. You can see the type of water I like to fish so I go swimming alot. I also like shooting underwater video with it.

I'll get the D80 out and play with it some day soon. I don't have the stock lens, I bought just the body. I have a Promaster 28-105mm lens and a Nikkor 70-300mm lens.

Nice.  Have you tried shooting any fly pics with the 28mm?  Seems like it has a close enough focal length and all the manual extras...  Look for dslrtips on youtube - great entry level shniz.

I've tried I can't get close enough. I'll check out the videos and see what I can come up with.
