STS Tan trilobal dubbing
« on: January 24, 2010, 08:55:44 AM »
Morning all,
Wondering if anyone knows where to get some STS tan trilobal dubbing at a good price and more importantly, a place that doesn't charge $6.95 for shipping. That's the dubbing for Lorens newest fly.

Also wondering if some other colors would be good on that fly.

I don't know what the shipping will run you.

Loren really does the best tutorials I've seen.  That's a great general searching pattern.    Subtract the tail and you would have a fly that was working well for Mark and me down on Spring this weekend.

I tied a few of those up, just in case I go to spring creek. In addition to the bead I added a hot spot made of hot orange thread.

I caught a couple on the Walts worm with a red thread head.  The Hair and copper also caught me a trout or two.

That fly really works there. You think the fish would have caught on by now that pattern is a fake!

I was pretty happy with the results of my Cress bug pattern that I made up as well.  It needs a little work still but I will share the final pattern when I am happy with it.

Size 8 2x long nymph hook .030 lead underbody

Makes a good anchor. You can also go to .025 or .020 lead for a lighter anchor.

Now I get to link our site! The tutorial says 5263 size 10 but 5262 size 8 comes out to be close to the same.

Don't be afraid some of those craneflies are huge. I think the trout just see a big meal coming at them and can't help themselves.

Nick,

Since we kind of drifted over to the subject could you tell how you were fishing these?  Was it on a complete dead drift or a bit of a pull? I had a hell of a time hooking those spring creek fish on anything larger than an 18... of which i tried many.

Its hard to explain but when I lead my flies especially this time of year I keep a slight bow in the line above the sighter. In other words your just tracking the flies at dead drift speed. The usually ends up being slightly slower than the surface current speed. I hope that makes sense.

John-
I'm not 100% positive, but I believe the STS dubbing is just Hareline's version of antron dubbing.  "Triblobal" refers to antron being a 3-sided fiber, which according to LaFontaine is what makes air bubbles stick to it so well.  So if you locate some appropriately colored tan antron, you should probably be in good shape.  I looked at Loren's tutorial, and it appears to be regular old antron dubbing in the pictures.
