I know a lot of beginner fly tiers often get overwhelmed by the choices in tying necks. Dry fly, wet fly, #1 grade, #2, grade, saddle, neck, etc, etc.

What necks do you have at your fly tying desk and can't do without? Color/Grade/Type

I'm the worst I have hardly any. I have hungarian partridge for wets and a few nymphs. A bs brown hen for colors on some nymphs (princes) and black and olive saddle hackles for wooly buggers. I hardly ever fish dries so I don't tie to many and the ones I do tie I like to use snowshoe rabbit for the wing if I can tied compara dun style. I also like cdc wings for something like an f fly.

I have a nice selection of necks and I prefer Whiting. I usually go for there silver grade and lower and you can get an unreal amount of flies out of there capes and saddles. I can safely say that overall I got more fly tying materials than a lot of fly shops.

What colors do you absolutely need? For dries and wets?

Grizzly Neck
Brown Neck
Dark Dun Neck
Black Neck

Drys,

Necks:

Grizzly ( Great all around and substitute)
Black (Terrestrials and Midges)
Sandy Dun ( I prefer this color over light blue dun. I just think it is more versatile to use on any thing from sulphers and Cahills to Little Olives.)
Brown (I would say this is just a good color and i use it a lot on my caddis imitations and darker mayflies)
Light Blue Dun (not used as much but i think it is important for dries.

Saddles:

Grizzly
Brown
Sandy Dun

Wets:

Partridge Skin (a must for wets and Nymphs)
Grouse (English and Ruffed Grouse I really like these not needed but nice to have)
Hen Back (I use these a ton they are cheap and you can get them in many different shades. To me they should be in any collection)

There are a lot more options out there but really it is up to you and what you have good luck with. I also shop a lot in bargain bins for my soft hackle stuff being that not a lot of guys fish or tie wets there is always something there that i can get a bargain on.

Great breakdown. I agree, in several forms Grizzly, Brown, and some sort of Dun are essentials. I'd add a Black Neck to that for sure.

On a side note if you are looking for a good dun neck check out Whitings Herbert Miner Selection they have awesome dun necks. Well worth the investment.
