DI7s, Streamers, and Banger Rods...
« on: February 15, 2009, 12:27:24 PM »
An odd technique often employed to extract finicky trout from deep rushing rivers is the use of Extra Fast Sinking Lines, a pair of streamers, and not your finest rod!

The process is really pretty simple, but since it goes against one of the cardinal rules of Fly Rod Maintenance many people do not stumble upon it.  String up a pair of your favorite streamers to a 9 foot length of 3x tippet and lash that to a fast sinking line like a Di7.  Here's the interesting part - don't use your favorite rod because just after you cast you need to immediately shove your rod tip to the stream bottom.

However, Charles Jardine does a much more eloquent job of describing the technique here: http://www.czechnymphs.com/tactics/tactics_2005_003.html

Dejon, I've messed with this a few times before with no luck.  I tried in muddy water twice last spring.  My hopes were that me standing above the holding spot I would be able to kick some food up to the fish also and maybe get them active (yes natural chumming, LOL).  I never used a sink-tip line, just a floating line with a few bb's on it.  I liked being able to get to the level of the fish in the water column, but still never had any takers.  I'll keep trying and add some of the tips by Charles Jardine.

I think the DI7 is pretty essential in the setup.  We should experiment a few times with this technique this year on the Dele.  I'll bet this might be clutch especially when temps are fluctuating and the fish are snug tight down in the deepest of runs.

Exactly.  I was just sifting through my rods considering which one I was going to sacrifice to perfecting this technique.  I think my old Sage DS 5wt has drawn the short stick.

Funny you say that because the old DS I was referring to is an old guide stick from my days with Katmai lodge in Alaska.  It has sentimental value, but hasn't left the rod sock in years.  Some tools were just meant to be used.   Actually, I was thinking a shorter 7footish rod might be the best choice for this method.  Easier to manipulate through the water column.  As long as it had a soft enough tip to play a fish to the net.  In fact, some short, soft tipped Ugly Stick might be the perfect rod - wouldn't have to think twice about shoving it down in-between rocks and the river bottom.

Humm you could buy a cheap blank and build a perfect rod with just the one idea in mind.

Ive got one for you here and most of you wouldnt think of it ,you have a pool or a lye or a spot that holds a fish or two . come up from below it with a sinking line and cast from across stream above the pool let the line sink and go through the pool as soon as it get through the pool lift your rod a bit . This takes line control as it swing repeat this is great in high water . use your favorite nymph or streamer set up . see what happens
