This is one of my recent favorites:

Replace the eyes with a bead for comp.  Which reminds me I really need to gather up the materials to make these in a few different colors: rootbeer, black, etc.

i wish i had something interesting to contribute to this thread, unfortunately my streamer fishing experience is pretty much zilch.  I tied some up earlier in the summer that were kind of similar to Strolis' dirt dart.  Also your basic zonker with some modifications.  I will say ive admired Galloup's streamers for quite awhie however ive never fished them.  That double bunny a couple posts above also looks fantastic.

Well, I've focused heavily on streamers for almost two years now, small ones, big ones, articulated ones, crayfish imitations, sculpins, baitfish, attractors ..... did I leave anything out?

Although I'm still testing out a lot of patterns, I keep coming back to a few that just produce the best for me.  The Circus Peanut (pretty similar to what is above) in white, olive, yellow and black is probably my favorite streamer when I can get away with that much flash -- higher water, off-color, or less selective fish.  I fish em big.

More often though I choose a sculpin pattern of my own with deer hair head and collar, zonker strip, hare's ear to match, a band of red and a bit of black crystal flash.  I fish them in olive and black mostly.   I keep trying to make a tan and yellow one work with only marginal success.  On these sculpins I do best with a size 4 or 6 streamer hook 4x long which pulls in the monsters and the average trout on a pretty regular basis.

Gotta love the Swimmy Jimmy, or any pattern Kelly Galloup ties for that matter.  Love the Zoo Cougars too.

D-

Funny stuff! That streamer n black w/ copper flash caught the largest wild rainbow I have caught to date on the Wautaga River, TN. Smith was there for it and it was a great chase, take, and fight...

It's the Galloup Big Hole I think?

Great Fly!

This is my favorite, it fishes pretty well for the stockers in the Genny.

I lucked out on a camping trip and landed this on one

I think the next batch I tie will have some sort of underwing to help maintain the profile, the marabou wing seems to mat down to almost nothing.

I learned it from by buddy Kalvin.  It accounted for most of my fish at this year's Nationals.  I think he calls it the Zion Curtain and learned it from some guy in Utah (check the link to the recipe), but I'm sure there are a 100 variations nearly identical. I think it's the combination of that Holographic and Palmer Chenille that really set it off.

Hey Dejon, or anyone who can help.  I really want to fish streamers to drop backs this spring.  should I be looking to swing flies on a floater, or fish actively on a heavy line?   some paterns and colors would be much appreciated

My  favorite streamer for all purpose fishing would have to be the Clouser Minnow.  You can pretty much catch anything anywhere on it.  I tie it in mostly just size 8 for trout and bass.  I use arctic fox tail instead of bucktail because I think it looks better and is much more durable, especially after a dozen smallies and a pike.  Unfortunately, Clousers are not legal in comps.

For comps I use buggers with ice dub substituted for chenille. On most of my buggers I use beads , except a few that I utilize for slower and stillwaters. I ty mine in a variety of colors as I feel they are as much a lure as they are a representation of food, and I have had good luck using colors that are not the norm.

Another good one would be a slumpbuster tied with a bead instead of the cone, making it legal for competition.

And not to forget about Kelly Galloup's flies, the Sex Dungeon is one of my favorite "big fish" streamers, but isn't a comp fly due to the tandem hooks and dumbell eyes.  I really like this fly for fishing to pike and bass, and have caught a few trout on them, but choose not to use them frequently for trout because they aren't legal in comp.

I've primarily used my lake lines when swinging for Dropbacks purely out of economics.  I'm usually running with a floater, DI3, and DI5, and switching depending on water depth and speed.  This coming season (economics pending) I'll be moving over to a traditional spey outfit with a selection of sinking tips.

2 of my favorite patterns are the double bunny and great lakes spider spey.  Each season seems to bring a new "hot color" pattern, but my perennial favorite is a bright olive or drab chartreuse sparkly dubbed (on a loop) underbody w/ an off white bunny over.  A little bit of red somewhere in the mix as a trigger (either as a hook base or collar).

I am a fan of buggers and Shenk's Sculpin myself.  I also have good luck with Zonkers.

This is one of my newest creations for smallmouths. I haven't got to try it out yet for the smallies yet but I have caught a few trout on it .

I have been playing around with some larger synthetic hair streamers on a density comp line. This one should be good for oversized browns looking for a bow to snack on.

That's a beast corey!  Do you have a trailing hook under there?  Wonder what she looks like wet?

I'll bet that thing looks like a hell of a meal for a brown  ;)

It seems like that rainbow would be very well proportioned once wet.

The material seems to take on very little water when wet, which is good for casting but still has a nice breathing effect. Seems to keep shape ok. The big ass hook keeps it riding upright on the retrieve or swing. I have toyed with the idea of a stinger hook and have some nice red ones I could put off the hook bend a few inches, but most of the action is in the last 2" or so of the fly and I am worried it may foul up.

Working on my epxoy skills- I have done a few at around 2.5"-3" with an epoxy head and smaller eyes that look like they may get it done.

Those are beautifully tied patterns Jim!!!

I'd love to try them in my local rivers, as the salmon fry (5 different species of Pacific Salmon) are just starting to hatch.

Thanks for sharing those images with us!

Cheers,
Todd

I'd love to see a tutorial on those streamers too Jim!  Looks like they'd be killer to swing for upcoming dropback season.
